Tarsy Carballas dead at age 91, Spanish soil scientist

Tarsy Carballas, a Spanish soil scientist, died on May 16, 2026, at the age of 91.

Born María Tarsy Carballas Fernández in Taboada in 1934, she was a pioneer in the study of soils in the humid temperate zone of Spain. She graduated from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1958 with a pharmacy degree, earned a chemical sciences degree in 1963 and a doctorate in pharmacy in 1964 from the University of Nancy.

Carballas worked at the Galicia Biological Mission in Santiago de Compostela and was known as an expert in forest fire prevention. She received the Castelao Medal in 2009, a Chemical Excellence Award in 2012 for a study of forest fire prevention, and the María Josefa Wonenburger Planells Prize in 2012.
