Bushy Maape, South African politician and premier of the North West from 2021 to 2024, died on May 16, 2026.
He was 68. Maape also served as a member of the North West Provincial Legislature from September 2021 until May 2024.
A member of the African National Congress, he was an anti-apartheid activist and former Robben Island prisoner. He earned degrees in psychology and economics from the University of South Africa, as well as honours degrees in developmental studies and economics from the University of the Western Cape.
