Asish Banerjee, an Indian politician and former associate professor at Rampurhat College, died on August 16, 2026, aged 74.
He represented the Trinamool Congress and served as the 13th deputy speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, as well as the state’s minister in charge of agriculture from 2017 to 2021. Banerjee was elected from the Rampurhat विधानसभा constituency five times, winning seats in 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2021.
Born in Rampurhat on November 3, 1951, he studied at the University of Burdwan, where he earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees before joining Rampurhat College as an associate professor of Bengali.
