Durga Lal Shrestha, the Nepali poet and lyricist who wrote in Nepal Bhasa and Nepali, died on August 16, 2026, aged 91.
Born in Kathmandu in July 1935, he was a prominent figure in Nepalese letters and was named Janakavi, or people’s poet, by Nepal Bhasha Parishad in 2003. Shrestha was also regarded as a progressive litterateur and received the Jagadamba Shree Puraskar in 2010 for enriching Nepalese literature through songs, poems, poetry and children’s literature written over six decades in his mother tongue and in Nepali.
