Born in Barbados on July 14, 1930, he later immigrated to London and became a former IFBB pro bodybuilder and Mr. Universe.

In the mid-1960s, Beckles won several British regional titles before taking the 1969 and 1970 NABBA Mr. Britain crowns. He joined the IFBB in 1971 and won the overall at the IFBB Mr. Universe. Beckles was also a three-time winner of New York City’s Night of Champions, including a victory in 1982 at age 52, and competed in more than 100 contests.
