Baird, also known as Patricia Ann Baird, built her career in Canada after emigrating from England at 17 and studying at McGill University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 1959 and a medical degree in 1963. She went on to the University of British Columbia, where she became a University Killam Distinguished Professor Emerita in the Department of Medical Genetics and later led that department from 1978, helping establish it as a major research centre.

Her work focused on medical genetics and on the relationship between medical technology and ethics. She was named an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
