Pepe Habichuela, the Spanish flamenco guitarist known as José Antonio Carmona Carmona, died on August 4, 2026, aged 82.
Born in Granada, he came from a flamenco family whose line was traced to his grandfather, Habichuela el Viejo, and continued through his father, José Carmona, and his brothers Juan, Carlos and Luis. Widely regarded as one of the leading flamenco masters and among Spain’s finest contemporary guitarists, he moved to Madrid in 1964 and performed with singers including Juanito Valderrama, Camarón de la Isla and Enrique Morente.
His 1975 tribute album to Antonio Chacón won the National Prize of Discography, and in 2001 he released Yerbagüena with The Bollywood Strings, blending flamenco guitar with Indian string music.
