Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, he became one of thoroughbred racing’s most accomplished riders, winning more than 5,000 races over a career that began in childhood. Albarado started riding at age 52, moved on to Louisiana bush tracks by 12, and earned his first official victory at Evangeline Downs in 1990 after turning professional.
His career was interrupted by serious injuries, including two skull fractures in 1998 and 1999, one of which required titanium mesh and a polymer plate, and another accident in late 2000 that sidelined him for much of the following year. He was also a recipient of the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.
