Born in Bari on January 6, 1943, he studied composition with Nino Rota and Luigi Dallapiccola and later trained in conducting under Hans Swarowsky and Thomas Schippers. From the late 1970s onward, Campanella became widely known as a specialist in bel canto, while also conducting works by Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky and Giuseppe Verdi.
