More about M. Ramachandran
M.
Ramachandran, an Indian politician and former Tamil Nadu MLA, died of cardiac arrest on November 2, 2026, aged 80. His legislative career included three assembly terms, following election victories in 1989 and 1996 from Thiruvonam and in 2016 from Orathanadu.
Contesting the 2016 state election for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), he won the Orathanadu seat and entered the 15th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. His victory was notable because he defeated R. Vaithilingam, the sitting MLA and then minister for housing and agriculture, who had won the constituency in the previous three elections. The outcome was described as a giant-killing upset in a constituency largely dependent on agriculture. Ramachandran lost the Thiruvonam contest in 1991 and 2001. In 2006, a DMK electoral arrangement left him unable to stand, as the party yielded the seat to a Pattali Makkal Katchi candidate. His final assembly term ran from 2016 to 2021.
