Ken Mitchell, the Canadian poet, novelist and playwright who helped shape Saskatchewan’s literary life, died on August 5, 2026, aged 85.
Born Kenneth Ronald Mitchell in Moose Jaw on December 13, 1940, he became a prominent voice in prairie writing and was active in the founding of the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild in 1969 and the Saskatchewan Playwrights Center in 1982. His work included poetry, fiction and drama, and he was known for writing about prairie culture.
Mitchell was also recognized with the Member of the Order of Canada and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.
