Born in Casablanca in 1953, he began playing piano at age eight after hearing Ray Charles’s “What I’d Say” and switched to guitar at 10. Gómez joined the Pop-Tops, the group that scored a hit in 1971 with “Mamy Blue,” and later built a career as an electric guitarist, including work with bassist Stanley Clarke and on his own solo projects.
In 1973, George Harrison invited him to London, where he met Keith Emerson, Jon Anderson and Carmine Appice; he moved to New York the following year and became an in-demand session player.
