
Stanton Davis, an American jazz trumpeter and educator, died on April 18, 2026, at age 80.
Born Stanton Davis, Jr. in New Orleans on November 10, 1945, he studied at the Berklee College of Music from 1967 to 1969 and at the New England Conservatory from 1969 to 1973.
He served as program director for MIT’s radio station from 1968 to 1974 and received a master’s degree in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University in 1983. Davis performed in the Boston area before working with George Russell, Mercer Ellington, Lester Bowie, Charlie Haden, George Gruntz, Jim Pepper, Bob Stewart and Muhal Ri… His only major release as a bandleader was 1988’s Manhattan Melody on Enja Records.
