Monty Roberts, the American horse trainer and author who promoted natural horsemanship through his Join-Up International organization, died on August 1, 2026, aged 91.

Born Marvin Earl Roberts in Salinas, California, he built a career around the training method he called “Equus,” which he said reflected a non-verbal language used by horses. Roberts also wrote several books, including the best-selling The Man Who Listens to Horses, and became known for touring with live demonstrations.

He also operated an Equestrian Academy in Solvang, California, and an online university to teach his methods.
