Born in London on March 16, 1930, he was the elder of two sons of Bryan Guinness, 2nd Baron Moyne, and Diana Mitford, later known as Lady Mosley. A member of the Guinness family, he was educated at Eton College and the University of Oxford.
He began his working life as a journalist before moving into merchant banking, joining Messrs Leopold Joseph. He also served as a non-executive director of Guinness plc, a position he held until retirement. His public service included membership of Leicestershire County Council from 1970 to 1974. A Conservative, he contested two parliamentary by-elections without success: Lincoln in 1973 and Coventry North West in 1976. The Lincoln contest was notable for the election of Dick Taverne.
