Dean Schwarz, an American ceramic artist, died on April 18, 2026, at the age of 88.
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on February 5, 1938, he was also a painter, historian, writer, publisher and teacher. Schwarz co-founded the South Bear School in 1970, where he taught functional studio pottery, and later founded South Bear Press in the late 1970s.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1960 and a master’s degree in 1961 from Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa.
