Born in Vasiuliškė on February 26, 1943, she studied at Vilnius University and built a career as an economist and university teacher before entering public life. Prunskienė became the first prime minister of Lithuania after the declaration of independence on March 11, 1990, and later served as minister of agriculture in the government of Gediminas Kirkilas from 2004 to 2008.
She also led the Peasants and New Democratic Party Union and the Lithuanian People’s Party, and was among the leading figures in the country’s post-Soviet political transition.
