Nicky Smith (English footballer) public figure dead at age 57

Nicky Smith, an English professional footballer and later policeman and football manager, died on April 13, 2026.

Born Nicholas Leslie Smith on 28 January 1969 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, he began his career at Southend United in the mid-1980s before moving to Colchester United in 1990. He later signed for Northampton Town in 1994 and went on to play non-League football for Sudbury Town, Cambridge City, Braintree Town, Maldon Town and Witham Town.

After his playing career, he captained, coached and managed the England police team, and also managed AFC Sudbury.

Nicholas Leslie Smith (28 January 1969 – c. 13 April 2026) was an English professional footballer. After his professional career ended, he played for several non-League teams whilst serving as a policeman and captained, coached and managed the England police team, as well as managing AFC Sudbury.
