Geraldine Barniville Irish squash and tennis player dead at age 83

Geraldine Barniville, an Irish squash and tennis player, died on January 30, 2026, at the age of 83.

A native of Birr in County Offaly, she came from a prominent legal family, the Houlihans of the D.A. Houlihan law firm.

Barniville won a record nine Carrickmines titles in tennis, beginning in 1963, and reached the second round of the 1964 U.S. National Championships, where she pushed eighth-seeded Carole Caldwell into a third set. She played in 10 Federation Cup ties for Ireland between 1964 and 1977, appeared more than 70 times for Ireland in tennis, and also represented her country in squash, competing at World Championships and on Irish teams in international events.

Geraldine Barniville (nee Houlihan; 7 November 1942 – 30 January 2026) was an Irish squash and tennis player. She was a native of Birr in County Offaly and came from a prominent legal family (of the D.A. Houlihan law firm).
