Hugh O’Flaherty, an Irish barrister and former judge of the Supreme Court, died on August 5, 2026, aged 88.

Born in 1937, he was educated at University College Dublin and the King’s Inns, called to the Bar in 1959 and appointed Senior Counsel in 1976. He was named to the Supreme Court in 1990 directly from the bar and served there until 1999.

After leaving the bench, he was elected a bencher of the King’s Inns. A later nomination to represent Ireland at the European Investment Bank, including a planned vice-presidency, was withdrawn after public controversy.
