Oleksii Yukov, a Ukrainian war archaeologist and head of the volunteer group Platzdarm, died on August 5, 2026, aged 40, after being killed by a landmine.
Known formally as Oleksii Oleksandrovych Yukov, he led the team that searched for and retrieved the corpses of dead and missing soldiers in Ukraine. He was born in Sloviansk, in Donetsk Oblast, and the work that later defined his career was shaped by an early encounter with human remains: at age seven, he saw skulls, bones and coffins exposed when construction disrupted part of the nearby Staromiske Cemetery during hospital building work.
