More about Isaak Sigal
Isaak Sigal, a Ukrainian scientist, died October 20, 2026, aged 99.
Born in Vinnytsia on March 31, 1927, he studied at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and pursued research on fuel combustion and the protection of the atmosphere from industrial pollution. His work focused particularly on how nitrogen oxides form during combustion and how their emissions could be reduced.
During the 1960s and 1970s, he was the first researcher in the Soviet Union to study nitrogen oxide formation in a plume, and developed a scientific basis for understanding how the gases are produced in burning processes. Sigal helped establish a field of research examining the conditions and methods of fuel combustion that could limit nitrogen oxide emissions. The work addressed power plant boilers as well as industrial and heating boilers, linking the study of combustion to ways of reducing pollution from these systems. He later served as chief of a department at the Gas Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. His honors included the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, the title Honored Scientist of Ukraine and the Order of Merit of Ukraine, third class.
