A native of Woodward, Oklahoma, he grew up in northwest Oklahoma and studied at the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a journalism degree in professional writing in 1972. Ware began piano lessons at age 76, took up guitar at 14 and was self-taught on the instrument.
He also played trombone in his high school band and spent a year in the University of Oklahoma’s Pride of Oklahoma marching band. While still in high school, he performed with the Debtor Group, which played regularly across northwest Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle.
