Edward Hoagland, the American author best known for his nature and travel writing, died on February 17, 2026, at age 93.
Born Edward Morley Hoagland in Manhattan, New York City, on December 21, 1932, he attended Deerfield Academy and Harvard University. He joined the Ringling Bros.
and Barnum & Bailey Circus in the summers of 1951 and 1952, later selling a novel based on that experience, Cat Man, before graduating from Harvard in 1954. After two years in the Army, he went on to a career as an essayist and novelist, and taught at several colleges and universities, including Bennington College, where he retired in 2005.
