Imam Tantowi, an Indonesian film director and screenwriter, died on August 21, 2026, aged 80.

Born in Tegal on August 13, 1946, he began his career in stage directing before moving into film, first as an artistic director and later as an assistant director. He made his feature directing debut in 1982 with Pasukan Berani Mati (Ready-to-Die Force) and went on to direct 18 feature films over a career that also produced more than 30 scripts for film and television.

Tantowi won the Citra Award for Best Original Screenplay for Si Badung at the 1989 Indonesian Film Festival, the Best Director award for Soerabaia 45 in 1991, and a Vidia Award in 1996 for the television series Suami-suami Takut Istri.
