Charles W.
Curtis, an American mathematician and historian of mathematics, died on May 3, 2026. He was 99.
Curtis was known for his work in finite group theory and representation theory. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College in 1948 and a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1951, where he studied under Nathan Jacobson. He taught mathematics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1954 to 1963 before moving to the University of Oregon, where he became an emeritus professor. While at Yale, he married Elizabeth, a kindergarten teacher and childcare provider, on June 17, 1950, in Cheshire, Connecticut.
