Geoff Stedman, a New Zealand physicist, died on May 3, 2026, aged 83.
He was known for his work on ring lasers and had research interests including the foundations of relativity and symmetry in quantum mechanics. Stedman received the Hector Medal in 1994 and had been a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand since 1989.
Born Geoffrey Ernest Stedman in Christchurch in 1943, he studied at the University of Canterbury and later earned a PhD from Queen Mary College, University of London.
