Michel Merlet French composer and pedagogue dead at age 86

Michel Merlet, the French composer and pedagogue, died on May 3, 2026, at the age of 86.

Born in Saint-Brieuc on May 26, 1939, he studied music at the Conservatoire de Paris, where his teacher was Tony Aubin. At the conservatoire, he won prizes for harpsichord, chamber music, counterpoint, fugue, musical composition and musical analysis in Olivier Messiaen’s class.

He won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1966 and began teaching fugue at the Conservatoire de Paris in 1978, succeeding Yvonne Desportes.
