Occupation: Torero.
Alain Montcouquiol, the French torero known as Nimeño I, died in Nîmes on November 5, 2026, aged 81.
Born in Ambert on September 4, 1945, he moved with his family to Nîmes when he was nine years old. The move brought him to the city where he would devote his life to bullfighting, pursuing the profession under the name Nimeño I rather than his birth name.
He was the brother of matador Nimeño II, another member of a family connected to bullfighting. Montcouquiol also wrote, developing a literary pursuit alongside his work as a torero. In 2009, he won the Prix Jean Carrière, marking an achievement beyond his career in the arena. His life encompassed both the bullfighting vocation for which he was known and a body of writing recognized with the prize. Nîmes figured in both the beginning and end of his adult life: he settled there as a child and died in the city at 81.
