Julian A.
Brodsky, an American businessman and co-founder of Comcast, died November 5, 2026, aged 93. Born in Philadelphia on July 16, 1933, he was raised in a Jewish family and graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
He served two years in the United States Army before training as an accountant. In 1963, Brodsky joined Ralph J. Roberts, one of his clients, and Roberts’ adviser, Daniel Aaron, to buy American Cable Systems, a cable television operator in Tupelo, Mississippi, with 1,200 subscribers. The partners incorporated the business as Comcast Corporation in 1969. Its name, devised by Roberts, combined “communications” and “broadcasting.” Brodsky served as Comcast’s chief financial officer and vice chairman, taking part in the company’s leadership after its founding. His work also included venture capital: he co-founded and chaired Comcast Interactive Capital, Comcast’s venture capital unit, now known as Comcast Ventures. His roles connected the company’s financial management with its investment operation, while his accounting training and Wharton education formed part of his professional background. The company began with the purchase of a small cable operator and was later incorporated under the name that reflected its communications and broadcasting business. Brodsky’s involvement in both Comcast’s founding and its venture-capital unit marked two distinct parts of his work with the company.
