Andreas Engel, a Swiss biologist, died on April 1, 2026, at the age of 82.

He was a structural biologist and co-founder of the Maurice E. Müller Institute for Structural Biology at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel.

Born in Bern on October 6, 1943, Engel studied physics and mathematics in Bern, where he received his PhD in 1972, and at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He joined the Biozentrum Basel in 1974, became professor for structural biology in 1986 after work in industry, and was named professor emeritus in 2010. Engel later joined Case Western Reserve University and pioneered the application of scanning transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy to image biomolecular complexes.
