Erwin Engeler, a Swiss mathematician and computer scientist, died on July 28, 2026, aged 96.
Engeler did pioneering work on the connections between logic, computer science and scientific computation during the 20th century. He studied under Paul Bernays at ETH Zurich and later completed his doctorate in 1958.
He then spent 14 years in the United States, teaching at the University of Minnesota and the University of California, Berkeley, before returning to Switzerland in 1972 to serve as a professor of logic and computer science at ETH Zurich. In 1959, he published an independent proof of several equivalent conditions for omega-categoricity. The Association for Computing Machinery named him a Fellow in 1995.
