Born Henrik Sven Hirdman on September 28, 1939, in Stavanger, Norway, he worked in diplomacy from 1963 to 2004. Before university, he completed military service at the Swedish Army Language School in 1958.
He then studied Slavic languages and social sciences at Uppsala University, where international relations was his major field. In 1963, he received a Master of Social Science degree from the university. Hirdman was the son of Einar Hirdman, a lecturer, and Charlotte Schledt, a language teacher and interpreter. His maternal grandparents were Emélie, who was Swiss, and Fritz Schledt, who was German; his paternal grandparents were Swedes Gunnar and Maj Hirdman. He had two sisters, Eili and Yvonne Hirdman. His honors included the Order of Friendship, H. M. The King’s Medal and the Order “Danaker.”
