Max Eiselin, the Swiss expedition leader who organized the 1960 ascent of Dhaulagiri, died on July 9, 2026.

Born on January 8, 1932, in Kriens, he was a trained businessman and an avid mountaineer who went on to found Switzerland’s first mountain-sport shop. In 1954 he began selling climbing equipment by mail order, offering hard-to-find items such as pitons, lightweight carabiners and Perlon ropes.

Drawing inspiration from the Swiss expedition mountaineer and photographer Lorenz Saladin, Eiselin took the initiative to assemble and finance the Dhaulagiri expedition, which on May 13, 1960 achieved the first ascent of the 8,167-meter peak. Six of the 13 climbers and two Sherpas reached the summit.
