
Tracy Kidder, the American writer whose nonfiction books included The Soul of a New Machine and Mountains Beyond Mountains, died March 24, 2026, of lung cancer.
He was 80. Kidder won the Pulitzer Prize for The Soul of a New Machine in 1982 for his account of the creation of a new computer at Data General Corporation.
He also received praise and awards for Mountains Beyond Mountains, his 2003 biography of physician and anthropologist Paul Farmer, founder of Partners in Health.
