
Lou Holtz, the American college football coach who led Notre Dame from 1986 to 1996, died on March 4, 2026, at age 89.
Born in Follansbee, West Virginia, Holtz served as head coach at the College of William & Mary, North Carolina State University, the New York Jets, the University of Arkansas, the University of Minnesota, Notre Dame and the University of South Carolina. His 1988 Notre Dame team finished 12–0 and won the Fiesta Bowl as the consensus national champion.
Holtz compiled a career college head coaching record of 249–132–7 and later worked as a television college football analyst for CBS Sports and ESPN.
