Born Robin James Cowling on March 24, 1944, he won eight caps for England between 1977 and 1979 and spent seven seasons with Gloucester Rugby, making 216 appearances from 1967 to 1974. He then moved to Leicester Tigers, for whom he played 184 times before retiring in 1981.
Cowling was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, and moved to the South West as a small baby; he later attended Sidcot School.
