A native of Monroeville, Pennsylvania, Toman played baseball at North Carolina State University, graduating in 1985 after a four-year run with the Wolfpack from 1981 to 1984. He served as team captain in 1983 and 1984 and earned All-Tournament Team honors at the 1984 Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
Toman later coached at the college level, leading Liberty from 2008 to 2016 and then Middle Tennessee from 2019 to 2022. Under his direction, Liberty reached two NCAA tournaments.
