Carpenter, an American marine biologist and professor of biological sciences at Old Dominion University, died on July 12, 2026. He was a researcher in marine biology and ichthyology whose work focused on the systematics and evolution of marine fishes, with particular attention to marine biogeography in the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific.

Carpenter earned a bachelor’s degree in marine biology from Florida Institute of Technology in 1975 and a doctorate in zoology from the University of Hawaiʻi in 1985. He collaborated for years with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Species Identification and Data Programme for Fisheries, helping produce identification guides for multiple ocean regions. His career also included fieldwork in the Caribbean, West Africa and the Philippines, and two fish species were later named in his honor.
