Known also as Javier Giraldo Moreno, he was a Catholic Jesuit priest, researcher, and defender of human rights. He studied philosophy and later earned a master’s degree in theology at the Pontifical Javeriana University in Bogotá, and completed additional specialization in regional analysis and spatial planning at the University of Paris I.

Giraldo began his priestly work in a poor neighborhood of Bogotá, where his concern for human rights took shape and was influenced by Camilo Torres Restrepo. He worked with the Center for Popular Research and Education, known as Cinep, and in 1988 founded the Intercongregational Commission for Justice and Peace, which brought together 45 Catholic religious congregations.
