Born on January 20, 1938, in Buxi Bazaar, Cuttack, in present-day Odisha, he built a career that stretched across more than six decades and included songs in more than 200 Odia feature films. Patnaik also contributed to Odissi music, devotional songs, folk music, semi-classical compositions and ghazals.

He was the son of Lal Mohan Patnaik, who served as Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. Patnaik died in Bhubaneswar.
