Born in Cítoliby near Louny on December 10, 1925, he came from a musical family and studied composition at the Prague Conservatory from 1945 to 1950 under Emil Hlobil and Miroslav Krejčí. He also pursued musicology in parallel and later became known for promoting the works of composers from the 18th-century Cítoliby school.
