Kent Carpenter, an American marine biologist who spent much of his career based in the Philippines, died on July 12, 2026.
Born on January 20, 1953, he earned a bachelor’s degree in marine biology from Florida Institute of Technology in 1975 and later completed a doctorate in zoology at the University of Hawaiʻi in 1985. After finishing his undergraduate studies, he joined the Peace Corps and was assigned to the Philippines in 1975, where he worked with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources on coral reef research.
Carpenter was known for research in the Verde Island Passage and for his work on marine biodiversity, including a biodiversity assessment of the fishes of Saba Bank atoll in the Netherlands Antilles.
