She was born in New York City on March 28, 1928, and built her career in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Stevens studied at Smith College, where she earned a degree in philosophy in 1949, and later attended the architecture program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
She worked for The Architects’ Collaborative before forming a practice with MIT faculty member Thomas McNulty in 1956. After their divorce in 1958, the two continued to work together until 1969, when they founded i Press Inc., a publisher focused on architecture and urban theory; Stevens directed the company until 1978. She also founded Design Guild in 1975.
