Born Jerry Lane Stovall in West Monroe, Louisiana, he graduated from West Monroe High School and went on to play at LSU, where he became a unanimous All-American in 1962 as a halfback. Stovall later played in the NFL with the St.
Louis Cardinals from 1963 to 1971 as a safety and punter, earning Pro Bowl selections in 1966, 1967 and 1969. He returned to LSU as head coach from 1980 to 1983, and later served as athletic director at Louisiana Tech University.
