Born on February 14, 1939, in Gangmouthan in what is now Assam’s Biswanath district, she built a career in education, writing and translation, with work that linked Assamese and Nepali साहित्य through translation and other literary contributions. Upadhyay earned a bachelor’s degree from Handique Girls College in 1959 and a postgraduate degree in political science in 1964, becoming the first woman from the Gorkha community of Assam to reach that level of academic achievement.

She was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award and, in 2025, received the Padma Shri for literature and education.
