Lucas was convicted in the 1976 shooting death of 16-year-old Anthia Jill Piper in Bonita Springs, Florida, where he also wounded two of her friends, Terri Rice and Richard Byrd Jr. Authorities said Piper had been Lucas’s ex-girlfriend, and the killing was carried out after their relationship ended.
A court sentenced Lucas to death in February 1977. He was executed by the state of Florida after spending about 50 years in prison, the longest interval between conviction and execution in the United States.
