Lucas was sentenced to death in February 1977 after being convicted in the shooting death of 16-year-old Anthia Jill Piper in Bonita Springs, Florida, on August 13, 1976. Prosecutors said Piper was Lucas’s former girlfriend, and that he also shot and wounded two of her friends, Terri Rice and Richard Byrd Jr.
He spent about 50 years in prison before Florida carried out his execution, a span reported as the longest between conviction and execution in the United States.
