Jim Lane, an Irish republican and socialist from Cork, died on February 17, 2026.

Born James Anthony Lane in 1938, he was a central figure in left-wing politics in Cork city from the 1960s to the late 1980s and was involved in many campaigns. He was also influential in republican circles nationally and was known as an advocate of socialist republicanism of a Marxist-Leninist hue.

Lane joined the Irish Republican Army, Sinn Féin and the Cork Volunteers’ Pipe Band in 1954, and took part in the IRA’s 1956–62 border campaign before resigning when the Cork brigade disengaged from the armed campaign.
