Annie Courtney, the Northern Irish politician and former Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly for Foyle, died on July 23, 2026, aged 26.
Born in Derry in 2000, she built a career in public service through both nursing and politics. Courtney became a nurse in Derry before joining the Social Democratic and Labour Party, and she was elected to Derry City Council in 1985.
She later served as mayor of Derry in 1993. In December 2000, after John Hume resigned from the Assembly, she was co-opted as his replacement for Foyle and remained an MLA until 2003. When she did not secure the party nomination for the 2003 Assembly election, she left the SDLP and sat as an independent.
