Gregory D.
Shorey Jr., an American politician who served as chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party from 1958 to 1961, died on May 18, 2026. He was 101.
Born on June 27, 1924, in Belmont, Massachusetts, he attended Boston University and served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1945 during World War II. Shorey was president of Young Republicans at Boston University from 1947 to 1948. He moved to Greenville, South Carolina, in 1950, led the South Carolinians for Eisenhower in Greenville County in 1952, and was chairman of the Greenville County Republican Party from 1952 to 1954. He was a delegate to the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Republican National Conventions and gave the seconding speech for Barry Goldwater at the 1960 convention.
